Transition Turkish Get Up

The Turkish Get up is one of our Assessment tools at Girya Garage.

We all have movement differences; whether lacking adequate movement through the joints, weak core muscles, dominate large prime mover muscles, poor balance, or bad proprioception (balance).

Get Ups will quickly highlight areas of need and help to overcome them. I frequently use the Turkish Getup as an assessment tool with clients to see an instant snapshot of their current movement skills.

Whether you know the Turkish Get up by heart or are just beginning to learn the steps, treat this exercise with respect and begin with a light weight. In fact, you could begin this movement without any weight and simply balance the bottom of a shoe on your fist. That’s the way we learned to do it at the StrongFirst Kettlebell certifications.

Balance the bottom of a shoe on your fist and cleanly transition from the tall sit position, into the half kneeling windill. Doing so will reinforce your center of gravity and maintain a stabile shoulder throughout the movement.

Keep your EYES UP and on the prize. Looking through your thumb and into the ceiling is a good sight.

Once you’ve found the Half Kneeling Windmill, proceed to do some rocking and open up the body.

So this is the money spot. If you do it well, the hand, knee, and foot are in-line with each other. This allows for a really smooth rocking motion. Watch the video and check it out. Remember…EYES UP.
